Fly’n For Fun 2026: A Celebration of Community, Aviation and Opportunity

Fly’n For Fun 2026 truly lived up to its name, delivering a week defined by connection, learning and a shared passion for aviation.

A Strong Start: Women in Aviation BushCat Build

The week began with an inspiring milestone, the Women in Aviation BushCat build, held in Parkes, NSW. Over five days, 25 women from all walks of life came together to take part in a hands-on aircraft build. The group reflected a diverse range of experience, from those with engineering and technical backgrounds to participants who had never picked up a tool before, all united by a shared curiosity and passion for aviation.

From day one, participants demonstrated enthusiasm and professionalism, working collaboratively to assemble the BushCat to a high standard. While minor challenges arose, as expected in any practical learning environment, they became valuable opportunities for growth, reinforcing both technical knowledge and confidence.

The build progressed rapidly across the week, with each day bringing new milestones and achievements:

  • Day 1: A group of 25 participants, each bringing different skills, attitudes and backgrounds, came together. Teams were formed, team leaders were appointed, and work began on assembling the fuselage, wings and primary flight controls.
  • Day 2: Focus shifted to assembling the wing coverings and refining the flight control systems, while the aft section of the fuselage was added and installed.
  • Day 3: Covering of all surfaces was completed, with teams beginning work on the engine, instrument panel and avionics, including wiring and soldering.
  • Day 4: The aircraft began to take its final shape with installation of the engine and undercarriage, alongside the application of sponsor decals.
  • Day 5: Final assembly of all completed substructures took place, followed by team celebrations and the presentation of certificates recognising each participant’s contribution.
  • Day 6: The completed aircraft was weighed and successfully test flown, marking a proud and rewarding conclusion to the build.

A special acknowledgement must go to Mariette and Errol, whose enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for the BushCat were instrumental throughout the build. Their guidance and willingness to share their expertise created an environment where participants felt supported, capable and inspired to take on new challenges.

Throughout the week, the buzz continued to build and interest from the local community grew. A special thanks to the team at Smeaton’s Bakehouse, who kept the group well fed with morning tea and lunch each day, and who also visited the site regularly to see the progress firsthand.

Under the guidance of experienced mentors, the group developed new skills, supported one another and built strong connections. The result was an outstanding achievement: a completed aircraft and a cohort of participants who left with increased capability, confidence and pride in their work. Seeing the BushCat (19-2505) successfully test flown during the weekend was a highlight and a testament to the success of the program.

A huge thank you to GAP/BushCat for supplying the aircraft for the build and for helping make it such a rewarding and memorable project to be part of.

Fly’n For Fun: A Weekend of Energy and Connection

As the weekend began, the airfield came alive with a surge of energy. Pilots and visitors arrived steadily by both air and road, each arrival adding to the growing excitement and unmistakable buzz that defined the event.

Despite less-than-ideal weather earlier in the week, the aviation community once again demonstrated its resilience and determination. Aircraft continued to arrive across Friday and Saturday, with many pilots fully embracing the spirit of Fly’n For Fun by camping under the wing. The steady rhythm of aircraft movements, combined with constant conversation and shared experiences, created a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that carried throughout the weekend.

A range of exhibitors were also on hand throughout the weekend, generously sharing their knowledge and experience across their chosen fields, adding further depth and insight to the event.

Beyond the flying, it was the sense of community that truly stood out. Friendships were formed, stories were exchanged and a shared passion for aviation brought people together from all backgrounds, reinforcing what makes events like this so special.

As day turned to night, the energy shifted but never faded. The campsite transformed into a lively hub. Laughter, storytelling and music filled the evening air, creating a warm and inclusive environment where connections deepened. It was a powerful reminder that aviation is not just about aircraft and airfields, but about the people who bring it all to life.

Learning, Sharing and Industry Connection

Beyond the flying and social activities, the event delivered a strong program of forums and exhibitors, creating valuable opportunities for attendees to learn, share knowledge and connect across the aviation sector.

Throughout the weekend, several key individuals took the time to present to engaged audiences, sharing insights into their companies, products and personal experiences within aviation. These sessions added depth to the event, offering practical knowledge, industry perspective and inspiration for those looking to expand their involvement in aviation.

Among the presenters were RAAus Youth Ambassadors Ashton and Jennifer, who brought energy and authenticity to their contributions, sharing their journeys and encouraging the next generation of aviation enthusiasts.

Together, the forums and exhibitor presence created a dynamic environment of learning and connection, reinforcing the importance of knowledge-sharing and community within the aviation industry.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Fly’n For Fun also placed a strong focus on inspiring the next generation of aviators, with a dedicated program designed to engage, educate and excite young people about aviation pathways.

A standout element of this was the expert STEM program delivered by Cran Middlecoat, whose passion for all things aviation and commitment to teaching the next generation was evident throughout the weekend. Through hands-on, interactive activities, Cran created an environment where young people and aspiring pilots could explore aviation concepts in a practical and engaging way.

His ability to connect with participants, combined with his depth of knowledge and enthusiasm, sparked genuine curiosity and excitement, leaving a lasting impression on those involved. The program not only introduced key aviation principles but also helped build confidence and inspire future pathways into flying and the broader aviation industry.

Together, these initiatives reinforced the importance of investing in future aviators, ensuring the passion for flight continues to grow for years to come.

An Evening to Remember

The social side of Fly’n For Fun was a true highlight, bringing the community together in a relaxed and vibrant setting. A lively bonfire became the centrepiece of the evenings, complemented by a pop-up bar and live music performances from talented RAAus members. With drinks generously supplied by BentSpoke, the atmosphere provided the perfect space to unwind, connect and share stories from the day.

A sincere thank you to the Parkes Aero Club for their generous support in hosting the Friday evening BBQ, where members and visitors gathered over great food, drinks and conversation to kick off the weekend. Their continued support extended into Saturday night, where they hosted the bar and helped create another memorable evening for all involved.

The event also provided an opportunity to recognise members of the community, with awards presented to those who continue to make a meaningful contribution to aviation.

The evening concluded with an outdoor screening of Sully: Miracle on the Hudson, enjoyed under the stars thanks to Jabiru, who’s film night provided a fitting end to a day centred around aviation, community and shared passion.

A Collective Effort

Events like Fly’n For Fun are only made possible through the dedication, passion and collaboration of many.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Parkes Council, HARS, and the RFS for their invaluable support in the months leading up to and throughout the week of the event. Without their support, the event would not have been possible. Volunteers played a vital role generously contributing their time, energy and expertise to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team worked tirelessly to coordinate the many moving parts, delivering a seamless experience for pilots, participants and visitors alike. Their efforts often go unseen but are fundamental to the success of an event of this scale.

RAAus also extends its sincere thanks to its sponsors, whose ongoing support continues to strengthen both this event and the broader aviation community. We acknowledge our principal sponsor, AMDA, and it was a privilege to welcome CEO Justin Giddings to the event.

We also gratefully recognise the contribution of our valued sponsor partners, including ROTAX, OzRunways, Garmin, Agile, Network Insurance Group, QBE, GAP, Jabiru, Foxbat, Tecnam and many others. Their continued support not only enhances events like Fly’n For Fun but helps foster growth, opportunity and connection across the aviation industry.

Looking Ahead

If Fly’n For Fun 2026 is anything to go by, the future is incredibly exciting. Planning is already underway for Fly’n For Fun 2028, which promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Building on the success of this year’s event, there are plans to expand with even more lead-up activities, including hands-on initiatives such as the BushCat build, creating opportunities for deeper engagement well before the event begins. Attendees can also look forward to a broader range of exhibitors, market stalls, increased opportunities for youth participation, and more interactive and educational experiences designed to inspire the next generation.

Most importantly, the vision for 2028 is to bring together even more aircraft, more members and more of the general public — creating a platform to showcase exactly how and why aviation is one of the most rewarding and exciting pursuits there is. Whether it’s a career pathway, a means to explore this incredible country, or simply the joy of flying for fun, aviation offers something for everyone.

Fly’n For Fun is more than an event, it’s an opportunity to come together and share that passion, and to promote what is often considered one of Australia’s best-kept secrets: Aviation through RAAus.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2028 for the next edition of Fly’n For Fun.
