Every pilot’s journey begins somewhere. For Alex, it started with a passion for aviation, a willingness to work hard, and a little help from an RAAus scholarship.
Growing up in Geelong, Alex was immersed in aviation from an early age. Family trips to the Avalon Airshow became a tradition, and with each visit his fascination with flight only grew stronger. There was never much doubt about what he wanted to do when he grew up.
By Year 10, Alex was already taking practical steps towards achieving that dream. During the school holidays, he independently arranged work experience at Lethbridge Airport, where he spent his days cleaning aircraft and helping around the airport. As a thank-you, he was offered a Trial Instructional Flight and from that moment, there was no looking back.
Determined to become a pilot, Alex worked part-time throughout his teenage years, saving every dollar he could for flying lessons. He also volunteered countless weekends cleaning aircraft and hangars in exchange for valuable flight time.
It was during this period that the team at Golden Plains Aviation encouraged Alex to apply for an RAAus scholarship. Alex was successful in the 2018-19 RAAus Scholarship Program, receiving support that proved to be a pivotal moment in his aviation journey. The scholarship provided valuable financial assistance during a crucial stage of his flight training, helping him achieve his Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) on 22 December 2018 and continue pursuing his dream of a career in military aviation.
That goal had always been clear: to become a pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force.
Alex initially joined the RAAF as an Officer in the Mission (Air Battle Manager) stream. Following officer training, he was posted to 114 Mobile Control and Reporting Unit in Darwin before later transferring to No. 1 Remote Sensor Unit in Adelaide.
While serving in Adelaide, a senior officer recognised Alex’s

aviation background and passion for flying, mentoring him towards pursuing a pilot career. His encouragement paid off, with Alex successfully transferring into Pilot’s Course.
Alex commenced pilot training at No. 1 Flying Training School at East Sale, flying the Pilatus PC-21. During this phase of training, he distinguished himself by receiving both the Leadership Award and the Most Proficient Ground School Award.
He then progressed to No. 2 Flying Training School at RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia to complete the Intermediate Pilot Course.

Recently, after years of dedication and perseverance, Alex completed his final flight and was officially awarded his coveted RAAF Wings.
Reflecting on Alex’s achievement, his parents say they could not be prouder.
“We are incredibly grateful to RAAus for the scholarship that helped support Alex’s early flying ambitions, to Golden Plains Aviation for their outstanding training and mentorship, and to the wider Lethbridge Airport community for the encouragement and support they gave him throughout his journey.
Thank you again to RAAus for the role you played in helping a young aviation enthusiast take his first steps towards achieving his dream.”

Alex’s story is a powerful reminder that every aviation career starts with a first flight, a supportive community and the determination to keep pursuing a dream. At RAAus, we’re proud to have played a small part in his journey and look forward to watching where his aviation career takes him next!
